Fireworks! This is by Takagi Masakatsu and comes from the CD/DVD Journal For People. Just by shifting the focus, he turns a common event into an abstract film reminiscent of Harry Smith. It begins on a purely optical level, playing with the way light refracts and highlighting color, and gradually pulls back to reveal what is taking place. Eventually, you can hear voices, and you are under the sky with the throng, watching explosions overhead. It’s also a beautiful demonstration of the the difference between the speed of sound and and the speed of light: That pause when you’ve seen the explosion but haven’t heard it, and you wonder what it will sound like.

I do love a good fireworks show. Makes me feel not so much “young” as “small” or even “insignificant,” but in a strangely comforting way.

Another Takagi Masakatsu piece that I like very much. It was filmed in Cuba and it’s on the World Is So Beautiful DVD.

One more Takagi Masakatsu piece, also from Journal for People. I’ve never been on ice skates.

This is from multimedia artist Takagi Masakatsu’s CD/DVD Journal for People, on Carpark. I wrote a column about his work a few years ago, but his videos weren’t on YouTube then. Several good ones still aren’t. All are worth a look.
