2006: Polibio Mayorga: Unlabeled CD-R

I borrowed this from an Ecuadorian cab driver. I was getting a ride to the airport and the cab driver was playing some of the most amazing music I’d heard. The melodies were played on a weird, cheap, magic-sounding synthesizer. There weren’t many vocals, but there would be these little fragments of words. We struck up a conversation, and I was like, ‘What is this? It’s blowing my mind.’ And he was like, ‘Oh, I guess you’d call it the national music of Ecuador.’ I’m like, ‘Really? Where can I get this CD?’ He was like, ‘In Ecuador, this would cost you $1.’ And I was like, ‘I’ve got $10 in my wallet right now.’ And he was like, ‘No, you take it. How long are you going away for?’ I said, ‘Two weeks.’ So he said, ‘I’m taxi cab number 43, make sure you get it back to me.’
