I remember reading about Tomboy around a year ago and he described Bach as one of his influences for that album. Reading him now describing his use of reverb as kind of a reflection of high vaulted ceilings and that church-like atmosphere both from his own life and some of the architecture of Lisbon, I get what he was saying back then. I've always noticed that you cite a lot of different artists in many of your (especially earlier) reviews, can you see any other ways this new album could be Bach-influenced besides that echoing atmosphere?

Well, I don’t know nearly enough about Bach to speculate on this. When I think “Bach” I think about something like “the beauty of mathematics” because as I understand it he had a genius for structure, interlocking parts, counterpoint, and so on. The only thing of Bach’s I know decently well is Glenn Gould’s first recording of The Goldberg Variations.

How Bach might tie into Tomboy I cannot say, but my sense is that Lennox operates on a much more intuitive level and doesn’t have much of a “deep structure” kind of thing going on. But certainly the connection between reverb and liturgical music is an interesting one, and I’ll bet there is some good writing out there about that.
