I help when Julie puts on a performance piece. One question is always, “What music plays when people file in?” My go-to for this situation is Rhythm & Sound, the guys from Berlin dub techno outfit Basic Channel doing proper-ish reggae. Here’s a tune from their excellent comp W/ the Artists, which is b/w an equally excellent Versions CD that I like even more but which seems to be poorly represented on YouTube. Not sure I have much of interest to say about this music except that I like it a lot. Strips dub, already a pretty lean music, down to its absolute essentials. The echo surrounding a tap on a woodblock is suddenly charged with conveying a large amount of emotional information. That kind of thing. But we’ll play the Versions disc when people are filing in, and it has a kind of neutrality mixed with anticipation that I like. Doesn’t suggest that anything in particular is going to happen, but does hint that something special just might.
