Friday I had two separate conversations—one in person, one via email—with two very talented young writers who are making a go at freelancing full-time. Among writers, there is a special kind of admiration for people who do this. You are your own boss and your ability to think of and express interesting things is the only thing that keeps you from starving. It’s scary! But also exciting. And hearing that people are doing it makes me very happy and also proud to be part of a community of writers. It’s like, “Hey, you’re doing it! I want to help!” Writing is a competitive world so it feels good to relish the moments when you realize we’re all in it together.
