hi from japan. i really adore your writings on music, some kind of a guiding light for me to explore new music. i discovered so many music through your columns and reviews (like, Gas, Herbert, many jazz stuff..) and i want to say thank you for that. The question i want to ask is, how do you feel about music that are painfully sad, like Sparklehorse or Elliott Smith, or maybe Mark Kozelek, because i rarely see your writings on music which would be pigeonholed as Sad-Sack or like.

Wow, thanks, I appreciate that. An interesting question that I am not sure how to answer. I feel like that Girls album from last year was considered sad-sack by a lot of people, some of whom liked it and some of whom didn’t. And of course that record means a lot to me.

I’ve never really gotten into the three artists you mention here. I like them all to varying degrees, and respect their music and understand why some people obsess over it, but I’ve never had a deep connection to any of these guys.

But I would say in general, I am very open to music that is, as you say, painfully sad. Music about depression, death, hopelessness, despair, loneliness. Nick Drake Pink Moon being a good example. That’s def. one of my favorite records of all time. I have written about this a little bit, but it’s one of the beautiful mysteries of music, that songs about sadness and loneliness can make you feel less sad and alone.
